HARD BOTTOM AREAS

Location:
There are 3 areas in the Martín García Channel  where hard material is present in the river-bed:
    - Between km 62.9 and km 64.8
    - Between km 69.7 and km 70 (Piedra Diamante)
    - Between km 93 and km 95

Effects of the speed on the "squat"

The design speed for Panamax type vessels sailing downstream at 32 feet is 7 knots and saling upstream in ballast 10 knots.

The existence of hard bottom areas prevents the developement of  speeds higher than the design speed in any of this areas, specially between curves km 62.3 and km 67.8.

The squat effect dramatically increases the draught of the vessel at excess velocity. Most Panamax trim by the bow as consequence of the squat effect.

VESSELS PASSING

Crossing areas:
  Km 88,1 – Km 91,1 width between slopes 178 m.

Anchoring areas:
North of km 124.3 and km 137.3 depths over 11 m at LIMB
("Inferior limit of the average of all lowtides").
